About half of the allotment gardens in the Netherlands are on an allotment site managed by an association. About 151 associations, representing 26,650 gardeners are federated in the AVVN, the only national association of allotment gardeners. Our organisation was founded in 1928 to improve the legal position of allotment gardeners and their sites. Allotment gardeners in The Netherlands play a key role in the conservation and improvement of the daily environment in the towns and villages. As no other their allotment gardens and allotment sites offer the opportunity for a harmonious combination of urban parks and gardens, space for outdoor recreation and a healthy environment. Partly because of this allotment gardening in The Netherlands finds itself in a positive movement. The AVVN, as the national allotment association, supports and directs these developments.
